THE 22 YEARS BEFORE THE INTERVENTION
My name is Alessia, I am 23 years old and I have been a member of the GFB for about 4 years. In 2009, during a cardiological check-up, I was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy, which is why I was prescribed a drug treatment to help my heart. After about a year I contacted the Bambino Gesù pediatric hospital, after an echocardiogram and the visit they took me in charge, changed my medications and with the possibility of undergoing a possible intervention with a Jarvik 2000 ventricular assistance system for adults with retro-ear cable. I went to checkups periodically for 5 years, continuing only with drug therapy which helped me a lot to live my life just fine. In the summer of 2015, I began to feel tired and my ankles swelled a lot.
THE INTERVENTION OF THE IMPLANTATION OF THE JARVIK 2000 DEVICE
So it was that they decided it was the right time to intervene, implanting the jarvik 2000 in my left ventricle on September 17, 2015. I was hospitalized on September 13 for the necessary examinations for the surgery. The surgery was performed by the heart surgeon Doctor Amodeo with his team and lasted about 8 hours, after I was taken to intensive care. The next day they extubated me and I woke up, the post-operative course went well, so much so that after 10 days they brought me back to the ward, I stayed for about 20 days, then finally I returned home.
MY NEW LIFE
The surgery has changed some things in my life, the Jarvik 2000 is a miniaturized rotary pump called an axial flow pump, which pumps blood from the left ventricle to the aorta. The Jarvik runs on batteries and is powered through a percutaneous ear cable placed behind the ear. Since there is a pump inside the heart, it is necessary to take coumadin (anticoagulant), to avoid the formation of thrombus. For the rest, life goes on normally you can take a shower, you can go to the pool without problems. Now I feel better, I don't get tired anymore and I can continue to live more peacefully having the opportunity to go out and have fun without major problems.
I am happy to have met the cardiac surgeon Doctor Amodeo, because he gave me a second chance, if I could not have the surgery, now I certainly would not be able to be here to tell my experience. The experience at the Child Jesus was very positive, I found very competent and helpful medical paramedics, I thank Doctor Amodeo, Doctor Filippelli, Doctor Adorisio, nurse Carla (Caregiver) and all the staff.
